Life is Precious, Choose Life!
St. Gianna Beretta Molla (1922-1962) was born on October 4, 1922 in Magenta (Milan), Italy. She earned degrees in medicine, surgery and also specialized in pediatrics. Gianna was married in 1955 and had three children. In 1961, towards the end of second month of pregnancy with her fourth child, physicians diagnosed a serious fibroma in her uterus that required surgery. The surgeon suggested that Gianna undergo a procedure to save her life but risk that of the child. The uterine operaton would have meant death for the unborn baby. Gianna chose not to undergo the operation. A few days before the child was due, Gianna told her doctors, "If you must decide between me and the child, do not hesitate. Choose the child. I insist on it. Save the baby." Gianna died on April 28, 1962, seven days after her fourth child, Gianna Emanuella, was born in good health. On May 16th, 2004, Pope John Paul II canonized Blessed Gianna Beretta Molla, a wife, mother, doctor, and profile witness.
